An article (38) is held in a complementally-shaped receptacle (36) of a resilient holder (34) while a process operation is carried out on a surface of the article (38). After the process operation has been completed, the holder (34) is bent in order to facilitate release of the article (38) from the receptacle (36). The method is particularly useful for performing a process operation such as sandblasting, etching or otherwise treating an inner surface of a hollow article (38) such as an orthodontic band or dental crown while a portion of the holder (34) masks and thus protects its outer surface.
