An EPID electrode configuration includes a plurality of parallel, tined, interdigitized anode (14) and cathode (12) lines deposited upon a faceplate (10). A plurality of guard elements (16) are provided between adjacent pairs of anode (14) and cathode (12) lines. In a first embodiment, grid lines (34) oriented perpendicularly to the anode (14) and cathode (12) lines are applied to a rearplate (30) of the EPID. Alternatively, the grid lines (234B) may be deposited on an intermediate coating of silicon dioxide (242) and photoresist (244).
