A process for prearing an arylacetaldehyde by reacting the corresponding arylmethyl halide with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a cobalt compound and a basic reagent in a liquid medium, characterised in that the basic reagent is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound and the liquid medium is a solvent system chosen from a nitrile, a hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof whereby the arylacetaldehyde can be produced in a good yield by the use of a small amount of the cobalt compound as the catalyst.

通过在液体介质中在钴化合物和碱性试剂存在下使相应的芳基甲基卤化物与一氧化碳和氢气反应来预测芳基乙醛的方法，其特征在于碱性试剂是碱金属或碱土金属化合物， 液体介质是选自腈，烃或其混合物的溶剂体系，由此通过使用少量的钴化合物作为催化剂，可以以良好的产率制备芳基乙醛。
