The invention provides damage evaluation method of compound semiconductor member, production method of compound semiconductor member, gallium nitride compound semiconductor member, and gallium nitridecompound semiconductor membrane. First, photoluminescence measurement is carried out on a surface 10a of a compound semiconductor substrate 10. Next, in an emission spectrum obtained by the photoluminescence measurement, damage is evaluated on the surface 10a of the compound semiconductor substrate 10, using a half width W 1 of a peak P 1 at a wavelength lambada 1 corresponding to a bandgap of the compound semiconductor substrate 10.
