A magneto-optical storage apparatus capable of using a magneto-optical storage medium in which information of the recording layer is transferred to the reproduction layer by applying a reproduction magnetic field by irradiating light of a predetermined intensity for reproduction, so that the information contained in a predetermined area can be reproduced. The magneto-optical storage apparatus includes a control unit for controlling an optical head and a permanent magnet for applying reproduction magnetic field, so as to reproduce the aforementioned information, calculate a reproduction error ratio accompanying the reproduction, and modify the intensity of the reproduction magnetic field according to the reproduction error ratio. By using the permanent magnet, it is possible to reduce the heat dissipation and suppress increase of the reproduction magnetic field intensity at a high temperature. Moreover, by displacing the permanent magnet, it is possible to apply the portion of the permanent magnet having the highest magnetic flux density to the region requiring the magnetic field most during the reproduction. A magneto-optical reproduction method is also disclosed.
