The invention is directed to a fishing reel (10) having a frame (12) and an operating mechanism on the frame (12). The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool, an element that is rotatable relative to the frame (12) around a first axis to cause line to be directed onto the spool, and a crank handle (16) that is rotatable relative to the frame (12) around a second axis to thereby cause the first element to be rotated around the first axis. The crank handle (16) has a body with a first portion (38) projecting radially in one direction from the second axis, a graspable element (46) on the first body portion (38), and a counterbalance assembly (48). The counterbalance assembly (48) includes a second portion (50) of the body which projects radially from the second axis oppositely to the one direction and a first weight element (54) attached to the second portion (50) of the body.
