A monitoring device for an electric rail system and/or a current collector of a rail system is disclosed. The current collector of the rail system is configured to be in electrical contact with the rail system and is capable of moving along the rail system,. The monitoring device includes at least one of the following associated movable detection components: a camera configured to record images ofthe rail system in a predeterminable region in front of or behind the current collector in a movement direction of the current collector; at least one vibration sensor on at least one slip contact ofthe current collector, the slip contact being configured to be in electrical contact with one of rails of the rail system; a spark sensor configured to optically detect sparks in a contact region; and/or at least one distance sensor for at least one rail of the rail system and configured to detect a distance between the attachment point of the distance sensor and the rail.
