The invention discloses a composite hydrogen retention coating and a preparation method thereof, and belongs to the technical field of metal materials. The composite hydrogen retention coating includes a stainless steel substrate, a metal transition layer and a metal oxide coating which are arranged in sequence; the outer layer of the composite hydrogen retention coating is provided with the stainless steel substrate and the metal oxide coating; and the stainless steel substrate is made of martensitic stainless steel or austenitic stainless steel, the metal transition layer is a metal Al transition layer, and the metal oxide coating is a Al2O3 coating. The composite hydrogen retention coating is prepared by a vapor deposition method. By repeatedly depositing the metal transition layer andthe oxide coating, the composite hydrogen retention coating with the total thickness being 0.1-5 microns is obtained. The hydrogen retention coating and substrate bonding strength is high, the preparation process is simple, the cost is low, and the hydrogen retention performance can be improved by more than 500 times at the working temperature being 600 DEG C.
