The invention relates to the technical field of coatings, in particular to polyester resin for a powder coating and a preparation method thereof. Raw materials of the polyester resin do not contain formaldehyde and are free of toxics, health and environmentally friendly. A bisphenol monomer has good heat resistance and high rigidity and is cheaper than neopentyl glycol. As other basic raw materials keep the same, the use of the bisphenol monomer can improve the glass transition temperature, storage performance and weather resistance of the polyester resin for the powder coating and the impactresistance of the coating; the addition of a small amount of trimethylolpropane can improve the branching degree of the polyester resin, and the use of an antioxidant can effectively enhance the oxidation resistance of the polyester resin, and then the weather resistance of the powder coating is improved.
