The invention discloses a method for preparing 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid by using a single solvent, and belongs to the field of fine chemical engineering. The method solves the problemsthat in the prior art, the conversion rate is not high and the production energy consumption is large are solved. According to the method, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol is used for preparing phenolate through a sodium hydroxide aqueous solution and a xylene reflux water diversion technology. Meanwhile, the same solvent, namely xylene, is used for a Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, and carboxylation is carried out on the phenolate. The conversion rate of the phenolate is increased to 95% or above. According to the whole process, the single solvent, namely xylene, can be effectively separated and recycled, post-treatment is easy, the production cost is reduced, and emission of three wastes is reduced.
