Provided is an imaging element comprising pixels which include a photoelectric conversion portion and a charge retention portion and which are capable of detecting a phase difference, the imaging element being capable of ensuring adequate pixel performance of the pixels. An imaging device comprising the imaging element is also provided. The imaging element (5) includes a pair of: a first pixel (51R) including a photoelectric conversion portion (61) which receives one of a pair of light bundles that have passed through different portions arranged in a row direction (X) of a pupil area of an imaging optical system, and in which a charge corresponding to an amount of received light is accumulated; and a second pixel (51L) including a photoelectric conversion portion (61) which receives the other of the pair of light bundles and in which a charge corresponding to an amount of received light is accumulated. Each of the first pixel (51R) and the second pixel (51L) includes a charge retentionportion (63) which retains charges transferred from the photoelectric conversion portion (61), wherein the photoelectric conversion portion (61) and the charge retention portion (63) are arrayed in acolumn direction (Y) in each pixel.
