The invention relates to an illuminator used for a bar-code scanner, and provides an illuminator. The illuminator comprises a supporting framework symmetrically arranged around the optical axis of anoptical sensor. The illuminator comprises at least one light bar connected to the supporting framework. At least one light source is connected to the supporting framework. Each one in the at least onelight source is constructed to guide light to face one of the opposite ends of one light bar in the at least one light bar. The illuminator further comprises a peripheral cover, and the peripheral cover is constructed to receive light emitted by the front face of each one in the at least one light bar. The peripheral cover is further constructed to emit dark-field illumination relative to the plane perpendicular to the optical axis with a small angle of incidence and emit bright-field illumination relative to the plane perpendicular to the optical axis with a large angle of incidence.
