This axle box for a railway vehicle is provided with an axle box body for accommodating bearings which support an axle of the vehicle. The axle box body has: an inner surface which defines an accommodation space for accommodating the bearings; a first side surface disposed, in a further outward side than the inner surface, on one side in the vehicle width direction with respect to the center of the accommodation space in the vehicle width direction; and a second side surface disposed, in a further outward side than the inner surface, on the other side in the vehicle width direction with respect to the center of the accommodation space. In the vehicle width direction, the shortest distance between the first side surface and the center of the accommodation space in the vehicle width direction and the shortest distance between the second side surface and the center are equal to each other.
