The invention provides a control device for a vehicle, the device being capable of appropriately controlling the inter-vehicle distance between a vehicle and a preceding vehicle, the vehicle being able of automatically driving without driving operation by a person. The device performs follow-up travel control which is performed to keep the distance between the vehicle and the preceding vehicle traveling in front of the vehicle in a predetermined distance (step S2), and determines whether a rider is in the vehicle (step S3), and under the condition that the follow-up travel is in progress and riders are in the vehicle is determined, the predetermined distance in the follow-up travel is longer than the predetermined distance in the follow-up travel under the condition that the riders are notin the vehicle (step S4, step S5).
