The invention provides an application of a metal oxide catalyst in preparation of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether, and belongs to the field of synthesis of oil additives. According to the invention, agroup VA metal oxide or a transition metal oxide is used as a catalyst, has a larger acid amount of a mediate strong acid, and can improve the selectivity of PODE3-5 in the polyoxymethylene dimethylether, thereby improving the yield. Meanwhile, the service life of the metal oxide catalyst can be prolonged. Data of embodiments show that the selectivity of the metal oxide catalyst used in the invention to a target product namely PODE3-5 is maintained stably, no deactivation phenomenon occurs after 100 hours of continuous reaction, and the selectivity to the PODE3-5 is as high as 75.3%, which is much higher than that (about 20-40%) of the PODE3-5 in the prior art.
