An image forming apparatus includes a housing (3); a mounting portion (4) in the housing (3) configured to hold a recording medium; one or more light receivers (12a, 12b, 12c) in the housing (3); a light adjuster that adjusts an amount of light incident on the light receivers (12a, 12b, 12c) based on presence or size of the recording medium on the mounting portion (4); and a controller that determines a size of the recording medium based on the amount of light that has been adjusted by the light adjuster.
