Provided are a cemented carbide and a coated cemented carbide which contain a carboxide of Zr, said cemented carbide having fracture resistance. A cemented carbide according to the present invention contains a hard phase that is mainly composed of tungsten carbide and a binder phase that is mainly composed of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Ni and Fe. This cemented carbide contains from 75% by mass to 95% by mass (inclusive) of the hard phase and from 5% by mass to 25% by mass (inclusive) of the binder phase in the region positioned on the inner side of the depthof 500 [mu]m from the surface. The hard phase contains a carboxide of Zr, and if Zrsur is the average content (vol%) of the carboxide of Zr in the surface region of the cemented carbide from the surface to the depth of 500 [mu]m, and Zrin is the average content (vol%) of the carboxide of Zr in the internal region of the cemented carbide positioned on the inner side of the surface region, Zrsur/Zrin is from 0.25 to 0.80 (inclusive).
