The invention discloses a method and system for checking cargos. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring a perspective image of a checked cargo; processing the perspective image to obtain a suspicious region; extracting local texture characteristics of the suspicious region, classifying the local texture characteristics of the suspicious region by utilizing a pre-created model to obtain a classification result; extracting contour line shape characteristics of the suspicious region, and comparing the contour line shape characteristics with a pre-created standard template to obtain a comparison result; and synthesizing the classification result and the comparison result, and determining that the suspicious region contains high-atomic-number substances.
