Disclosed is a method for automatically generating a grid and multi-level of detail of a shader. In many applications related to computer graphics, a multi-level-of-detail technology is widely used for optimizing rendering efficiency. Various kinds of multi-level of detail, such as the multi-level of detail of a geometry layer and the multi-level of detail of a shader, are also developed and researched in succession. In addition, many methods for automatically generating the multi-level of detail are generated. However, the simplification of a geometrical body and the shader is not simultaneously considered in current methods. In the present invention, a geometrical body and a shader are jointly simplified, and a method for generating corresponding multi-level of detail is provided, each level of detail being represented by a combination of a pair of models and the shader. The method can optimize the combination at each level of detail, and can also adaptively generate the level of detail at different distances. Compared with a method individually using the multi-level of detail of a model or the multi-level of detail of the shader, the present invention has better effects on balancing rendering efficiency and quality.
