The presently disclosed projection-type display apparatus is provided with an illumination section (1) having a light valve (21) for modulating an illumination beam (L1) based on video data and emitting a modulated beam; a light source; and a plurality of illuminating optical members for generating the illumination beam (L1) on the basis of light from the light source and guiding the illumination beam (L1) to the light valve (21); a projection lens (24) for projecting the modulated beam from the light valve (21) onto the projection surface (30A), wherein a detection beam enters the projection lens (24) from a direction opposite the direction of propagation of the modulated beam; and an imaging device (22) disposed at a position optically conjugate with the light valve (21), wherein the detection beam enters the imaging device (22) via the projection lens. At least one of the plurality of illuminating optical members has the optical property of reducing a noise component with respect to the detection beam, which has been generated inside the illumination section (1).
