The invention discloses a rate-distortion optimization coding method based on a RGB source video. The method is characterized in comprising the steps of S1, inputting the RGB source video; S2, converting the RGB source video into a YUV video; S3, carrying out predictive coding on the YUV video obtained through conversion; S4, carrying out rate-distortion optimization: in the predictive coding process, for each coding mode, calculating the coding bit number, converting a decoded reconstruction video in the coding mode into the reconstruction video in an RGB space, and calculating distortion between the RGB reconstruction video and the RGB source video; S5, calculating the rate-distortion cost corresponding to each coding mode according to the coding bit number and the RGB distortion calculated in the S4; and S6, selecting the coding mode with the lowest rate-distortion cost for coding. The coding efficiency and coding quality of the RGB video are improved, and the display experience of a user is improved.
