The invention relates to a surface having properties that reduce light scattering by water condensation. A demisting means consists of atomic clusters affixed to the surface and dispersed over same, wherein the clusters are selected from among transition metals and silicon. The invention also relates to a method for producing the surface having properties that reduce scattering by water condensation to a selected wavelength within the range between 100 nm and 50 micrometers. The method comprises the steps of selecting the wavelength, obtaining a glass or polymer surface that has been subjected to optical polishing, and affixing atomic clusters to the surface, wherein the clusters are selected from transition metals and silicon and separated from one another by a distance of the order of the selected wavelength or less. In this way, the surface and the mehtod can be used to obtain a durable demisting surface.
