The present invention provides a method or the like for producing a culture medium composition which involves removing, in advance, divalent metal cations included in a polymer compound which has an anionic functional group, preparing a dried powder of the polymer compound, and mixing the dried powder with a culture medium. Furthermore, the present invention provides a method for refining a polymer compound having an anionic functional group, the method being characterized by obtaining a polymer compound having an anionic functional group and having a reduced divalent metal cation content included therein, by mixing: an aqueous suspension of a polymer compound having an anionic functional group; and a cation exchanger for exchanging a divalent metal cation for a univalent metal cation.
