According to an embodiment, the semiconductor light-emitting element includes a substrate, first to third semiconductor layers, first and second electrodes and a metal layer. The substrate has a first region and a second region provided with a convex portion protruding from the first region. The first conductivity type is of a first conductivity type, and is separated from the substrate in a first direction. The second semiconductor layer is of a second conductivity type and is between the first semiconductor layer and the substrate. The third semiconductor is between the first and second semiconductor layers. The first electrode is provided between the first semiconductor layer and the substrate, and is electrically connected to the first semiconductor layer. The second electrode is provided between the second semiconductor layer and the substrate, and is electrically connected to the second semiconductor layer. The metal layer is between the first electrode and the second region, and between the second electrode and the first region. The metal layer includes a concave portion which conforms to the convex portion of the substrate.
