The invention discloses a fault test method for video playing equipment. The method comprises the following steps: performing framing processing on a currently-played monitoring video, and acquiring a continuous first preset frame number of pictures, wherein the monitoring video is an output picture recorded in real time during playing of a test video on the video playing equipment; performing fault detection on the acquired pictures, and determining a fault type of the video playing equipment; and generating a fault report of the video playing equipment according to the fault type, and transmitting the fault report to a remote terminal. The invention also provides a fault test system for the video playing equipment. Through adoption of the fault test method and system, labor cost on an aging test of the video playing equipment is lowered.
