Provided is a liquid crystal composition, which satisfies at least one of such characteristics as high upper limit temperature of a nematic phase, low lower limit temperature of a nematic phase, low viscosity, adequate optical anisotropy, large dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability with respect to ultraviolet light and high stability with respect to heat, or which has an adequate balance among at least two of the above-mentioned characteristics. Also provided is an AM element which has a short response time, high voltage holding ratio, high contrast ratio, long service life and the like. A liquid crystal composition which has a nematic phase and contains, as a first component, a specific compound having a large dielectric anisotropy and, as a second component, a specific compound having a low viscosity. This liquid crystal composition may also contain, as a third component, a specific compound having a high upper limit temperature or a low viscosity and, as a fourth component, a specific compound having a large dielectric anisotropy. A liquid crystal display element which contains this composition.
