The invention provides drying groove paper for a filter rod and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the steps that mechanical fiber removing is performed on a fluff pulp board to obtain fluff pulp; one or several of bast fiber, chemical synthetic fiber, cotton fiber, bamboo fiber and plant protein fiber is/are treated into fiber with the length of 2-10 mm; the treated fiber and the fluff pulp are evenly mixed according to the weight ratio of 1:9-1:1; air laying, glue spraying solidifying and drying forming are performed to obtain the groove paper. The groove paper prepared through the preparation method has the advantages of being high in bulk, good in filling property and high in filtering effect and can improve adsorption of tar, NH3 and NNK in cigarette smoke and improve the smoking comfort of cigarettes.
