The invention discloses a method for solving the purpose of package sealing of the side surface of a square steel-shell power lithium ion battery. The method comprises the steps of stretching the periphery of a bottom shell of a finished square battery to be semi-circular arc and pressing to form a sealing groove; then pressing the periphery of a cover plate of the battery to form a sealing groove; subsequently, putting a sealing ring suitable for the square battery into the sealing groove in the bottom shell of the battery, and then putting the cover plate of the battery; and finally, buckling the periphery of the bottom of the battery stretched by a stamping die on a battery cover at a time. The method can be used for solving the problems of product failure, reduction of cycle life, low yield and the like caused by various bad factors such as change of stress, perforating, embrittlement, oxidization and leakage due to the conventional hot-melting welding.
