The invention provides a method for searching a multimedia file, terminal equipment and a server. The method comprises that the terminal equipment obtains encrypted thumb-nail information of a first multimedia file of at least one multimedia file from the server, and the encrypted thumb-nail information of the at least one multimedia file corresponds to encrypted content of the at least one multimedia file; the terminal equipment decrypts the encrypted thumb-nail information of the first multimedia file to obtain thumb-nail information of the first multimedia file; and when it is determined that the thumb-nail information of the first multimedia file corresponds to a target multimedia file, the terminal equipment obtains encrypted content, corresponding to the thumb-nail information of the first multimedia file, of the first multimedia file from the server. According to the method, terminal equipment and server, the target multimedia file can be found rapidly and conveniently in the encrypted multimedia files of the server by searching the thumb-nail information of the multimedia files.
