The invention relates to a general template for an automated relay protection tester and an instantiation method of the general template. The general template comprises basic template information, an IEC 61850 parameter and a protection test project. The basic template information comprises a template name, a protection network segment, a protection name, device description, a protection model, an access node and an IP address. The IEC 61850 parameter comprises a fixed protection value, a control word, a soft pressing plate and data model information of a protection event. The protection test project comprises setting value calculation and setting under the protection test project. The general template for the automated relay protection tester and the instantiation method of the general template have the advantages that the adaptation of the automated relay protection tester is improved, compared with the method that different templates are set according to protection devices of different manufacturers, by means of the general template and the instantiation method of the general template, the maintenance difficulty and the maintenance workload of the template are remarkably lowered, the operation complexity of the automated relay protection tester is lowered, and a user can conduct instantiation the template of the protection device of a specific model quickly.
