A process for preparing a selective hydrogenation catalyst, in which a catalyst precursor comprising at least one group VIII metal in metal form and at least one support made up of at least one oxide is provided, is described, wherein said process is characterized in that a step of bringing said catalyst precursor in metal form, in the liquid phase and in the presence of a reducing and/or inert atmosphere, into contact with a nonpolar solvent containing a siliceous compound; said siliceous compound is chosen from silanes containing at least one Si-H bond and at least one Si-C bond, silanols and cyclic siloxanes. The selective hydrogenation process using said catalyst is also described.
