The invention relates to a catalyst for preparation of ethanol by catalytic hydrogenation of acetic acid and preparation and application thereof; the catalyst comprises 0.5-5% of an active metal, 0.1-10% of an additive metal, 1-15% of a carrier modifier and 70-95% of a carrier; the active metal is platinum; the carrier is a mixture of one or more than two substances of silicon dioxide, activated carbon, activated alumina and kieselguhr in arbitrary proportion; the additive metal is a combination of one or more than two substances of Li, Mg, Mn, Zn, Rh, Sn, Ni, Ru, Re, Pd and Ce in arbitrary proportion; the carrier modifier is a combination of one or more than two substances of alkaline earth oxides, alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides, alkali metal silicates, group VII metal oxides, group VII metal silicates, group VIII metal oxides and group VIII metal silicates; and the catalyst is used for preparation of the ethanol by catalytic hydrogenation of the acetic acid, the conversion rate reaches 80%, and the ethanol selectivity reaches 80%.
