A paper currency handling device comprises: paper currency storage vaults which store paper currency; a conveyance path which is connected to the paper currency storage vaults and capable of conveying the paper currency within the paper currency handling device; a jam detection part which is capable of detecting a paper currency jam in the conveyance path; and an output part which is capable of outputting a message. When a first condition, including the detection by the jam detection part that the paper currency has jammed in the conveyance path, is satisfied, the paper currency handling device causes the output part to output a notice to the effect that a record is to be made for non-stored paper currency which is deposited in the paper currency handling device and not stored in the paper currency storage vaults.
