The method of controlling an engine start for a hybrid vehicle includes: determining whether a starter motor is in trouble when an engine start is requested, slip-controlling the transmission clutch for torque of the motor and the engine and transmission torque of the transmission to become independent of one another while starting the engine by the motor when the starter motor is in trouble, controlling the motor to generate driving power needed to start the engine when the slip-control of the transmission clutch is started, and starting the engine while controlling pressure of the engine clutch so that the driving power of the motor may be transmitted to the engine.
