The invention discloses application of a Dioscorea zingiberensis extract in preparing anti-cerebral ischemia drugs. Specifically, the Dioscorea zingiberensis extract with mass percentage content of total saponins of steroid higher than 90% has protective effect to cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. The Dioscorea zingiberensis extract can be extracted by the following method: pulverizing dried Dioscorea zingiberensis rhizome, sieving with a 20-mesh sieve, performing reflux extraction with ethanol-water solution, centrifuging, removing impurities, enriching with macroporous adsorption resin, performing extraction with n-butanol, and performing low pressure vacuum concentration to obtain the Dioscorea zingiberensis extract. Through HPLC measurement and area normalization method, the content of total saponins of steroid is higher than 90%.
