The invention relates to an electrolyte of a lithium ion battery and a lithium battery containing the electrolyte. The electrolyte consists of organic carbonic esters and carbonic hydroxybenzene alkene ester which is dissolved in the organic carbonic esters, and the mass of the carbonic hydroxybenzene alkene ester accounts for 0.1 to 2% of the total mass of the electrolyte. The heat stability of an interface passivation membrane of a solid electrolyte interface of a lithium battery cathode is increased, and the service life of the charge-discharge cycles of the lithium battery at high temperature is prolonged. In addition, when the electrolyte is charged and discharged, gases, such as ethylene, or propylene cannot be generated, and therefore, the battery cannot be expanded, and the safety of the battery is increased.
