A muffler assembly (1) including one or more exhaust pipe(s) (2), a polymeric housing (4) carried by at least one of the exhaust pipe(s) (2); a thermal insulating layer (6) lining the housing interior surface and extending between the housing (4) and exhaust pipe (2) at the housing-exhaust pipe interface (7); wherein the thermal insulating layer (6) includes a nonwoven fabric; wherein when the fabric is exposed to heat, the fabric increases in thickness to seal the muffler assembly (1) at the housing-exhaust pipe interface (7) and provides thermal sulation to the polymeric housing (4).
