In this machine tool (10), vertical guides (28) are attached to the back surface of a base (12). An ascent/descent unit (21) moves vertically with respect to the base (12) under the guidance of the vertical guides (28). A driving source (30) for rotationally driving a vertical feed screw (35) which extends parallel to the vertical guides (28) is attached to the back surface of the base (12). The driving source (30) is coupled to the lower end of the vertical feed screw (35). As a result, the center of gravity of the machine tool (10) can be set at a lower position compared to when the driving source (30) is coupled to the upper end of the vertical feed screw (35). Thus, the stability of the machine tool (10) can be increased. The processing accuracy of the machine tool (10) can be improved. In addition, since the driving source (30) need not be disposed at the upper end of the machine tool (10), the overall height of the machine tool (10) can be reduced.
