The method comprises the following steps that reference image information comprising information of the eyes of users are obtained; in the reference image information comprising the information the eyes of the users, pupil image information and iris image information of the eyes of the users are recognized and obtained; the pupil image information and the iris image information, obtained in a recognized mode, of the eyes of the users are compared; according to comparison results, the terminal screen luminance is regulated. The invention further discloses the terminal for automatically regulating the screen luminance. By the adoption of the method and the terminal for regulating the terminal screen luminance, the function that the terminal automatically regulates the screen luminance according to the states of the human eyes can be achieved, and the requirements of the users are met.
