A chuck has a main portion (1) that is rotated about a longitudinal axis (3). Several jaws (4) are radially displaced on the main portion for gripping a workpiece. A chuck drive unit is provided for rotating the chuck about the axis. A center point (2) is axially shifted in the main portion and axially engaged with the workpiece gripped by the jaws. An electromotor (5) is coupled to the center point for axial displacement.
