Provided is a method for producing a thin polarizing film which has excellent optical characteristics and excellent in-plane uniformity at the same time. This method for producing a thin polarizing film comprises: a step wherein a laminate is produced by stretching a thermoplastic resin base in a first direction and then forming a polyvinyl alcohol resin layer on the thermoplastic resin base; and a step wherein the laminate is contracted in the first direction and stretched in a second direction.
