The invention discloses a method of separating recoverable material from products containing mercury. The method includes crushing products to form crushed material, mixing crushed material with a liquid which has an oxidizing agent which has been chosen from a group which sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and chlorates, oxidizing at least a portion of metallic mercury in the products for forming mercury oxide under influence of oxidizing agent. The method further includes separating a sludge, which sludge having formed mercury oxide, from at least a portion of the liquid.
