A device (300) for stiffening a golf club shaft (106) which includes a strip of material configured to engage the exterior of the golf club shaft. The longitudinal axis of the strip extends in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the golf club shaft when the strip engages the golf club shaft. The strip increases the stiffness of a portion of the golf club shaft when the strip engages the portion of the golf club shaft. The strip may include longitudinal fibers (302) configured to extend in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the golf club shaft when the strip is engaged to the exterior of the golf club shaft. An associated method for fitting a golf club with a shaft stiffening device is also described.
