Disclosed are: a gel member for optical use, which is used in the space between a light guide plate and a light-emitting diode that serves as a backlight light source of an optical device; a method for assembling an optical device using the gel member for optical use; and an optical device. Specifically disclosed is a gel member for optical use which is used by being interposed between a light guide plate and a light-emitting element that is composed of a light-emitting diode (LED) in an optical device. The gel member for optical use is characterized by satisfying the following conditions (i)-(iii). (i) The gel member for optical use is composed of a transparent gel such as a silicone gel or an acrylic gel, which has a JIS-A hardness of 0-80 in accordance with JIS K6253 or a penetration (at 25 DEG C) of 20-200 in accordance with JIS K2207. (ii) The gel member for optical use is in the form of a cord, and the peripheral surface of the cord-like gel member is brought into contact with the light guide plate and the light-emitting element. (iii) The gel member for optical use has a repulsion of not more than 12 MPa at a compression rate of 30%.
