A method and an apparatus for recognizing an optical cable are provided to prevent an erroneous cutting of the optical cable by enabling a worker to easily find an optical cable to be cut. An apparatus for recognizing an optical cable includes an optical unit, a fiber single ending unit, a signal processor, and a sound output unit. The optical unit transmits two optical signals to one optical fiber in the optical cable and detects a phase difference, a time difference, and light intensities of two reflected optical signals, which are reflected by an external disturbance. The fiber single ending unit generates the time difference. The signal processor removes a noise from the reflected two optical signals and demodulates the two optical signals. The sound output unit outputs a sound according to the optical signals from the signal processor.
