An exhaust emission control device used for an internal combustion engine and equipped with an NOX catalyst device which holds NOX in exhaust gas well when an oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas is high, separates the NOX thus held to effect a regeneration treatment when an oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas drops, and reduces and purifies the NOX thus separated to N2 by reducing substances in the exhaust gas, wherein a regeneration treatment is carried out by varying a combustion air/fuel ratio from a lean air/fuel ratio (AL) to a set rich air/fuel ratio (AR), and an N2O reducing agent is supplied to the NOX catalyst device during a first set period (t2-t3) where the air/fuel ratio of the exhaust gas in the NOX catalyst device changes from a lean air/fuel ratio to a set rich air/fuel ratio in order to start a regeneration treatment, and or during a second set period (t6-t7) after the air/fuel ratio of the exhaust gas in the NOX catalyst device became a theoretic air/fuel ratio (AS) in order to finish a regeneration treatment.
