Provided are a cooling method and a cooling device for reducing the fluctuations of the thermal deformation of a mover of a machine tool. In front of a column (1), there are formed a pair of upper and lower guides (3), on which a saddle (7) is so suspended that the saddle (7) can move transversely. The guide faces (5) of the guides (3) and the sliding face (9) of the saddle (7) are contacting-sliding faces. The sliding faces (9a, 9b, 9d and 9e) having large calorific values which have to be cooled are defined in advance by simulations. A fluid conduit (25) for cooling the heating portions specified is formed to feed a cooling liquid from the portion (9a) of a lower calorific value to a portion (9e) of a higher calorific value, thereby to circulate the cooling liquid.
