There is provided a method for selecting time-values of time-based navigation functions in a video recording system, including steps: selecting a time-based navigation function from at least one of functions of instant replay and quick skip; distributing the time value from a plurality of programmed time values and at least a non-programmed time value appointed by a user to the time-based navigation functions; when activating the quick skip function, skipping ahead X seconds corresponding to the time value and reinitiating playback of the video program; and when activating the instant replay function, skipping backwards X seconds corresponding to the time value and reinitiating playback of the video program.
