The invention provides a method for preparing a reaction nitrogen arc cladding titanium carbonitride based cermet coating. The method comprises the following steps: using tungsten electrode nitrogen arc welding equipment; taking a tungsten electrode as a cathode; taking a metallic substrate of which the surface is pre-coated with graphite powder and ferrotitanium powder which are prepared according to certain proportion as an anode; and performing cladding by a nitrogen arc thermal source under the protection of nitrogen gas, and reacting on the surface of the metallic substrate to synthesize the titanium carbonitride based cermet coating. The method has the advantages of simple equipment, easy operation, low preparation cost, good performance of the coating, strong practicability, and high practical value of improving wear resistance of the metallic surface.
