Dictionary data giving one or more classifying distinctions for classing characters for each registered character data is pre-stored in a storage component, and the character identification program enables a computer to carry out the followings: classifying distinction appointing step, the classifying distinction is appointed by appointing component; character image acquiring step, the character image in identify purpose is acquired by the acquiring component of character image; checking object reduction step, the checking object is reduced into registered character data giving classifying distinction appointed by the appointing step in the registered character data in the dictionary data; checking step, the characters in the character image and each registered character data of the checking object reduced by the checking object reduction step are checked; and character output step, the characters identified by the checking results are outputted by an output component.
